Phrase vs Clause 
Phrase 
A phrase is a group of words without a subject and a finite verb. It does not express a complete idea. 
 ðŸ‘‰ It works as a noun, adjective, or adverb in a sentence. 
Examples
in the room → prepositional phrase 
The book is in the room. 
very happy → adjective phrase 
She looks very happy. 
running fast → participial phrase 
The boy running fast is tired. 
to win the prize → infinitive phrase 
His dream is to win the prize. 
playing cricket → gerund phrase 
Playing cricket is fun. ✔ 
Key point: 
No subject + finite verb combination 

Clause 
 A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a finite verb. 
 A clause may or may not express a complete idea. 
 Examples: because he was tired → adverbial clause 
He slept because he was tired. 
who is playing outside → adjective clause 
The boy who is playing outside is my brother. 
that she is honest → noun clause 
I believe that she is honest. 
when the bell rang → adverbial clause of time 
The students stood up when the bell rang. ✔ 
Key point: 
Subject + finite verb present
