Articles  (with a Noun)

Definite articles (such as "the") and indefinite articles (such as "a" or "an") are used before a noun. 

The definite article is used to refer to a specific thing, while the indefinite article is used to refer to any one thing. 

For example, "the car" refers to a specific car, while "a car" refers to any car.

To specify one thing out of many, we can use the word "one" instead of "a" or "an". 

For example, "One gun is not good." specifies a single gun out of many.

The indefinite article "an" is used before a noun that starts with a vowel sound. For example, "an egg" and "an honor" are correct, while "a egg" and "a honor" are incorrect.

However, articles are not used before uncountable nouns or after the phrases "kind of", "type of", "sort of", and "matter of". 

Example, 

we say "what sort of book do you want?", not "what sort of a book do you want?", and we say "she needs a mouse", not "she needs a mouses".

Choose the correct option:

Important Usages of Articles

1. The Holy books, such as the Holy Quran and the Bible, are considered sacred texts by many people around the world.

2. When referring to someone by their name and title, we do not use an article. For example, "Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah" and "President Mamnoon Hussain" do not require an article.

3. The Muslim community and the British people have both had a significant impact on world history.

4. The Ravi River flows through Pakistan and India, while the Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world.

5. The Titanic was a famous ship that famously sank on its maiden voyage.

6. The Nation and the Dawn are both popular newspapers in Pakistan.

7. The Sahara Desert and the Gobi Desert are both located in Asia.

8. The Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are all examples of heavenly bodies, but we do not use "the" before "Mars".

9. Family names, such as the Bitterings and the James Dillingham Youngs, are used to identify a group of related individuals.

10. The Bang-e-Dra is a famous book written by Allama Iqbal.

11. When referring to body parts, we use "the" for most parts, such as "the nose" and "the ear", but not for the head, which is already singular.

12. The Taj Mahal is a famous historical building located in Agra, India, and it is often referred to as "the crown of palaces".

13. When referring to both parents together, we can use "the" or omit the article: "The mother and the father attended the PTM", "The mother and father attended the PTM", or "The parents attended the PTM".

14. The directions, such as the East and the West, are used to refer to specific points on the compass. For example, "he walked south" refers to a general area, while "he walked to the East" refers to a specific direction.

15. The head of an institution, such as a school, is often referred to as the headmaster.

16. Islands that have plural names, such as the West Indies, the Maldives, the Congos, and the Netherlands, all take "the" before their name.

17. When referring to countries with specific names, such as the People's Republic of China or the United States of America, we use "the" before the name along with the appropriate noun (such as "state", "kingdom", "republic", etc.).

18. Mountain ranges, such as the Himalayas, the Alps, and the Caucasus Mountains, take "the" before their name.

19. The superlative degree, such as "the highest place", is used to indicate the highest degree of a certain quality.

20. The comparative degree is often used with "of" to indicate a comparison between two things. For example, "he is the taller of the two" compares two people's height, while "he is the better of the two" compares their overall abilities.

21. Adjectives such as "the rich", "the poor", and "the youth" are used to represent a whole class of people who share a certain characteristic.

22. When referring to a group of things that represent a whole, we use "the" before "whole" or "same". For example, "the same girl" refers to a specific girl who was previously mentioned, while "the whole class" refers to all the students in a particular class.

23. When referring to a specific person with a title or name, we use "the" before the title or name. For example, "he is the Newton of our country" refers to a specific person who is known for their scientific achievements, while "I need a Wasim Akram for my team" refers to a specific cricket player. I met a Miss Gulnaz who was unknow to me.

24. When referring to groups of people or things, we use "all" or "both" before "the". For example, "all the girls" or "both the boys" refers to a specific group of people.

25. When using ordinal numbers, we do not use "the" before the position, but we do use it before the name of the country. For example, "the first two chapters" refers to a specific position in a book, while "the USA" refers to a specific country.

26. Article, ‘the’ is used before musical instruments, for examples, “She plays the piano, and he plays the guitar.’

Omission of Articles

1. We do not use "the" before certain nouns, such as God, Hell, and Heaven.

2. We do not use "the" before metal nouns, such as gold and silver, unless we are specifying a particular type or origin, such as "the gold of Africa".

3. We do not use "the" before most abstract nouns, such as love and honesty, unless we are specifying a particular type or instance of the noun.

4. We do not use "the" before most material nouns, such as plastic and wood, unless we are specifying a particular type or quality of the material.

5. We use "the" before certain disease names, such as the mumps or the plague, but not before ‘hepatitis’ ‘diabetes’

6. We do not use "the" before most language names, such as Urdu or English, unless we are specifying "the English language" or a similar phrase.

7. We do not use "the" before most game names, such as cricket or hockey, unless we are specifying a particular type or instance of the game.

8. We do not use "the" before "man", "men", "woman", or "women" when referring to humanity in general, but we use "the" before these nouns when referring to specific individuals or groups, such as "the man in the play" or "the girl who told me".

9. We can use "the" before a prepositional phrase to specify a particular type or origin, such as "the water of Pakistani rivers".

10. We use "the" before "Urdu" when referring to the language, as in "the Urdu language".

11. No article ‘the’ with names of season, spring, autumn, winter, (also written with small letters), I like spring (season), but ‘the’ used when they are specified. The spring of 2020 was so good to me.

6- Article (a/an, The)

In English grammar, articles are a type of determiner that precedes and provides information about nouns. 

There are three articles in English: "a," "an," and "the." 

Examples:

1. "A" and "An":

 "A" is used before singular, countable nouns that begin with a consonant sound.

Example: 

1. I saw a dog in the park.

2. There is a book on the table.

 "An" is used before singular, countable nouns that begin with a vowel sound.

Example: 

3. She is an excellent singer.

4. She goes to a university.

5. Write an ‘r’ before ~at, it becomes ‘rat

2- "The":

    "The" is used before singular or plural nouns to refer to specific or particular things.

Example: 

5. I saw the dog that chased the cat.

"The" is also used before singular or plural nouns that are known to both the speaker and the listener.

Example: 

6. Pass me the book, please.

It's important to note that articles are not used with uncountable nouns or plural nouns in general statements. 

Example:

7. I love music. (No article is used before the uncountable noun "music.")

8. Cats are adorable. (No article is used before the plural noun "cats" in a general statement.)
