Q.i. Why should bad books be destroyed?

Ans. Bad books should be destroyed because they create space for new books. They waste time and money when they are sorted out. They waste valuable time and may mislead people from the right path. Good books improve knowledge, but bad books create confusion and negative thinking.

Q.ii. How did he muster the courage to throw the books into the river?

Ans. At first, he hesitated because he loved books. But when he realised that the books had occupied his compartment, they were useless. He gathered courage and threw them into the river. He felt relieved after getting rid of them.

Q.iii. How did Jerome suspect liver disease? What diseases did he imagine?

Ans. Jerome read a medical leaflet and started comparing symptoms with his own condition. He imagined that he was suffering from many serious diseases except housemaid’s knee. He became worried and thought his liver was out of order.

Ans. At Oxford, a team headed by Professor Sir Howard Florey and Dr. E.B. Chain worked on the concentration of penicillin. It included trained chemists as well as bacteriologists. They had all the equipment that Fleming had lacked. They succeeded in producing a practical concentration of penicillin

Ans. Penicillin was hailed as a wonder drug. It revolutionised the healing of war wounds. It saved countless lives. It proved to be the strongest weapon yet forged in the fight against diseases. It also stimulated other scientists and new researchers to find something better.

Ans. The American laboratories were gleaming, dustless, air- conditioned and sterilized. Penicillin could not be discovered there because their cultural plates were not dirty. There was no way for a mould spore to come in and drop on the culture plate.

Patriotism means love and devotion to one’s country. A patriot always works for the progress and prosperity of his homeland. He respects the laws of the country and is ready to sacrifice for its safety and honour.

Patriotism is an important quality for the success of any nation. Patriotic people promote unity, peace, and brotherhood. They avoid corruption, dishonesty, and harmful activities. They work sincerely in their respective fields for the development of the country.

Students can show patriotism by studying honestly and becoming responsible citizens. Teachers, doctors, engineers, and other professionals should perform their duties with sincerity. Paying taxes honestly and respecting national property are also signs of patriotism.

Our Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah showed great patriotism by struggling for an independent homeland for Muslims. Similarly, Allama Iqbal inspired the nation through his poetry. Their efforts remind us that patriotism requires sacrifice and determination.

We should avoid actions that harm our country’s reputation. Instead, we should promote good values, education, and unity. A true patriot always prefers national interest over personal interest.
