Simple, Complex, Compound, and Compound-Complex Sentences

Type of Sentences:
1-Simple Sentences:
A simple sentence has one subject and one verb (one independent clause).

1. She reads daily.
2. The sun is shining.
3. Ali plays football.
4. The baby is sleeping.
5. Birds fly in the sky.
6. He opened the door.
7. They are happy.
8. The teacher explained the lesson.
9. I like tea.
10. We finished our work.

2-Complex:
A complex sentence has one independent clause + one dependent clause (joined by subordinating conjunctions such as because, although, when, if, since, while).

1. I stayed home because it was raining.
2. She smiled when she saw me.
3. We cannot play because the ground is wet.
4. He worked hard so that he could pass.
5. Although he was tired, he continued working.
6. I will call you when I arrive.
7. She cried because she lost her bag.
8. If you study, you will succeed.
9. He ran fast because he was late.
10. I like the book that you gave me.

3-Compound:
A compound sentence has two independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

1. I wanted to go, but it was raining.
2. She cooked dinner, and he washed the dishes.
3. He was tired, so he went to bed early.
4. The sun was hot, yet they continued playing.
5. I called her, but she did not answer.
6. He studied hard, so he passed the exam.
7. She tried many times, but she failed.
8. We went to the park, and we enjoyed a lot.
9. He is poor, but he is honest.
10. The bell rang, so the students entered the class.

2-Compound-Complex:
A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent clauses + one dependent clause.
Example:
1. I went to the market, and I bought fruits because they were fresh.
2. She was happy, but she cried when she heard the news.
3. He worked hard, and he succeeded because he was determined.
4. I will come early, but I will leave if you are late.
5. She opened the door, and she smiled when she saw her friend.
6. He was tired, but he finished the work because it was important.
7. We reached the station, and the train left after we arrived.
8. I like the dress, and I will buy it if the price is low.
9. She studied well, so she passed the exam although it was difficult.
10. He apologised, and she forgave him because he was honest.

Simple Comparison:
Comparison of sentences:
A simple sentence has one independent clause. 
Example: 
She runs.

A compound sentence has two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction. 
Example: 
She runs, and he walks.

A complex sentence has one independent clause and one dependent clause. 
Example: 
When she runs, he walks.

A compound-complex sentence has two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. 
Example: 
When she runs, he walks, and I smile.

Compound-complex sentences combine the features of both compound and complex sentence structures.

  27. I opened the window because it was hot. .

  28. The cat is sleeping on the mat. .
