A Comparison Passage on the History of the World
The history of the world can be divided into three broad periods with respect to its development: the ancient world, the medieval world, and the modern world. Each period has its own unique features, achievements, and challenges. There were many ups and downs. The ancient world was the age of beginnings. Great civilizations such as Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome laid the foundations of law, writing, architecture, and philosophy. People lived simple lives, and most work was done by hand. Communication was slow, and travel was very difficult. However, these civilizations gave the world systems of government, mathematics, and literature that still influence us today. In contrast, the medieval world was a period of kingdoms, empires, and religious influence. Religious institutions were the centre of of knowledge. And knowledge was often preserved in religious institutions. During this time, the Islamic Golden Age made remarkable progress in science, medicine, and astronomy, while Europe experienced feudalism and later cultural revival. Trade routes expanded, linking Asia, Africa, and Europe. Compared to the ancient world, society became more organized, but education was limited to certain classes. The modern world is very different from both the ancient and medieval periods. The Industrial Revolution, beginning in United Kingdom, changed the way people worked and lived. Machines replaced hand labor, cities grew rapidly, and new inventions transformed transportation and communication. In the 20th century, world wars reshaped political boundaries, and technology advanced at an extraordinary speed. Today, the digital age connects people globally within seconds. In comparison, the ancient world built the foundations, the medieval world preserved and expanded knowledge manifold, and the modern world transformed it into rapid scientific and technological progress. While life in the past was slower and simpler, today’s world is faster and more complex; and with the passage of time chaos. Yet each age has contributed something valuable to human civilization.
